the Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge - Lake Koocanusa [ Fernie / Cranbrook] - August 10-12, 2012

New Wakesurfing Competition Brings the World to Lake Koocanusa this August

GOLD BAY, LAKE KOOCANUSA July 18, 2012 – The Rocky Mountain Wakesurfing Association (RMWA) is proud to announce that the first event of its kind in Canada, the national qualifier for the World Series of Wake Surfing 2012, will be held at Lake Koocanusa this August 10 – 12. The Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge will see the world’s best wakesurfers demonstrating their skills behind a beautiful Centurion Enzo 244. Along with the competition there will be numerous events, demos and activities for competitors, their guests and the general public to get involved.

The Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge (event six in the international seven-stop competitive series) gives riders an opportunity to compete and qualify for the premier wakesurfing event in the world: the Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship in Parker, Arizona, September 27 – 29, 2012. While top competitors from across North America are already signing up to take part, the Koocanusa competition was established to enable local western Canadian riders who would not normally have such an opportunity to compete and possibly win themselves a place at the Worlds. Along with a pro division there will be amateur, junior and master categories for both men and women.

As a fundraiser for the event, H2O School is thrilled to host a camp with a highly-acclaimed pro-wakesurfing coach immediately before the competition. Join Canadian Dominic Lagacé, one of the top placing skim-style wakesurfers world-wide, for his camp August 6 – 8. Dominic is one of the most requested wakesurfing coaches internationally, so don’t miss the chance to learn from this legendary athlete. For those who have some skills on the water already, this pro can provide instruction on how to spin, do shuv-its, catch big air or put together a run for an upcoming contest. Other pro riders already committed to competing at the KWC include James Walker, Jimmi Sparling, Keenan Flegel, Jacqualine Fort, Brian Baker, Sean Cummings and Caroline Villeneuve.

Interested in taking part in a camp, checking out the action as a spectator or getting involved as a volunteer or sponsor? The RMWA encourages everyone to visit their website, www.rmwa.ca for full event details and to contact them at info@rmwa.ca for more information. Spectators are welcome to come check out the action at Sunshine Houseboats (Gold Bay) throughout the weekend and especially for the finals taking place on Sunday, August 12. Food and retail vendors will be onsite, adding a festival atmosphere to the competition. Additionally, the entire event will be broadcast live at www.wake9.com .

Ready to sign up as a competitor? The fee to compete for the weekend is just $115 which includes your welcome dinner barbecue, warm-up and competition runs and a KWC competitor’s teeshirt. Visit www.rmwa.ca/register/ to register today.
