Varkala, on the south western coast of Kerala, India
Hey there,
I live in Richmond BC and started surfing in Tofino about a year ago.
Earlier this Feb, while i was in India visiting family i decided to go find some waves.
Here is a little edit of some of my time spent in a place called Varkala, on the south western coast of Kerala, India.
The surfing is not good by any means.. but i want to share the fact that there is some good un-crowded surf in India.
The waves are quite small in the footage unfortunately, but these spots really come alive on a bigger swell.
Ed's (the name of the break in most of the footage) is a left point break thats quite fast and breaks on a shallow sand bottom.
River temple : A Left point break at a river mouth. Not quite as fast as Ed's but a really fun wave.
There was also a left in front of the cliffs at the resort which i was staying at. I did not surf it because it breaks over/near rocks and i did not feel confident enough.
I imagine these would all hold a swell of up to maybe 7 to 8ft. The biggest day I was out was probably around 4 ft and it was amazing. I saw a trend that the winds would usually blow shore in the early afternoon and would usually change to onshore later on.
This was my first out of country surf trip and i absolutely loved it. Its not Bali, but its a beautiful place with good food, good people, fun waves and no crowds in the water.
Check it out if you ever get the chance!
Our old friend Greg Warnick sent in a few photos. For you who don't know Greg, he used to live in an A-Frame overlooking Florencia Bay BP [before park]. He now endures life in Punta Mita Mexico and continues to entertain many BC surfers. I hear PD + family are headed that way soon.
