Three VanIsle Groms head to Westport
CC, Frazer and their buddies have been talking about surfing in another competition since the last day of Surf Jam '04. When the posting came up about the CWC in Westport is wasn't long before our fees were sent in and the trip south planned. There was room for one more in the truck so we invited their buddy Kye along.
Making more of a surf safari out of the trip we headed across the border on the Wednesday morning before the contest. We left Tofino at 5:00 a.m. bound for the Coho ferry to Port Angeles, first destination La Push. Thanks for the recommendation Dom!
La Push was fun, we hit it just right. When we paddled out into the water the surf was OK but within forty minutes it was good. We had a great session, the first time the boys had surfed in a foreign country.
Everyone was stoked!
Heading south from La Push down US101, we had a cool drive with some great ocean and mountain vistas but... our US brothers need an education in forestry, specially when it comes to replanting.
We hit Westport just before sunset, checked out "The Groins" then drove up to "The Cove" to find Guto and Angus relaxing in the van after a great session at Westhaven State Beach. It was too late for us to head out so we checked into the The Alaskan Motel, inexpensive but clean.
They were even cool with us hanging our wetsuits to dry off the eves.
We surfed Westhaven the next two days, in really good conditions, the water was warm, the sun shining, light off shore winds, even the locals were pretty friendly. Everyone was chatting it up in the water and the parking lot about the contest.
The weather turned Saturday morning and the conditions were pretty crumby for the contest. All three boys made it through their heats and into the finals, I made it through to the semi's in Masters Shortboard.
Saturday the swell direction shifted a little west. When the days heats were over we headed to the The Groins. The boys had a great session while I stayed on shore to shoot some pix.
On Sunday the conditions at Westhaven were still bad, add rain and on shore wind. The boys did great in the final regardless. We took in the awards ceremony at The Islander, Kye ended up with a trophy for second place and we shared stories and hung with the Canadian contingent.
Booking for the border we just made the late ferry back to Vancouver Island and hit Tofino at 4:00 a.m.
It was an awesome trip, so what/where next???
