Rip Curl Pro Tofino 2017 Event Recap - Video:Justin Jung Video & Photography

The 11th annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino presented by Monster Energy took place May 12th - 14th at beautiful Cox Bay, Canada. The three day event hosted an array of competitors from Canadian locals, to international travelers from across the globe. With 12 separate divisions, the surfing level was at an all-time high, as Canadian National Champions were crowned.

The pride of Tofino surfing, Peter Devries, reclaimed his throne achieving his 7th Pro Men's division title as he stood atop the podium after dominating the fun, chest-high surf in front of a packed crowd of surf fans.

Peter Devries Returns To The Top After Notching 7th Career Rip Curl Pro Tofino Title!

Sunday, May 14th 2017 (Cox Bay, Tofino, BC, Canada) – Competition resumed at Cox Bay for the third and final day of the 2017 Rip Curl Pro Tofino presented by Monster Energy. Beautiful sunny skies and fun 2-3 foot waves greeted competitors as 12 separate division winners and Canadian National champions were crowned. Tofino may be a small town, but hundreds of surf fans gathered on the shoreline to cheer on competitors for the largest Canadian surfing event of the year.

In the premiere Pro’s Men’s division, hometown hero Peter Devries didn’t confirm his participation in the event until hours before the start due to a bad lower back issue. However, going into the event with little to no personal pressure allowed Devries to surf relaxed, which lead to his sensational 7th career event title! Devries battled through the toughest draw in competition history and overcame a rampaging Pat Curren to take the crown with an impressive 16.24 heat total in the decisive final.

"It feels really good [to re-capture the Rip Curl Pro title], especially since I think this is the most unexpected win I think I’ve ever had. I’ve been battling injuries the last little bit, I wasn’t even sure if I would be able to surf this weekend," Devries noted on what the win meant to him.

Devries added, "my motto this weekend has just been to keep it simple. I could do maybe a total of four different maneuvers and just try to stick to that, catch good waves and go fast."

In a record breaking performance, yesterday’s standout women’s competitor Sanoa Olin continued her roll as 11-year-old went on to victory in the Women’s Pro/Am division. Olin squeaked a victory over past champion, Sara Taylor by a mere 0.06. Olin is the youngest professional division winner in the 11-year history of the event. Finishing the final in third place was Olin’s sister and last year Pro/Am winner, Mathea Olin, as 4th place went to veteran Leah Oke. On describing her record setting performance, Olin exclaimed, "I’m so excited, I didn’t realize I had won until my mom told me and I was like ‘What!’ I was seriously not expecting it, I’m so happy. It was super tricky out there but I felt pretty good with the waves I got. I’m so excited right now."

In what many considered the most competitive amateur division of the event, Sean Forrester backed up his U18 victory from 2016 with another championship title. Forrester held off a stalwart of shredders including Elijah Fox, Jackson Malcom De Gruchy, and Evan Thomas Puma

Other division winners include; Kevin Shulz (Monster Energy Expression Session), Matt Myers (Open Mens), Ben Murphy (35+ Masters), Doug Ludwig (Legends), Fred Sanford (U16 Boys), Mathea Olin (U16 Girls & Longboard Womens), Fraser Juurlink (U12 Boys), Sanoa Olin (U12 Girls), Robber Ferguson (Longboard Mens), and a great performance by Victoria Fiege, Daniel Shoemaker, and Scott Patterson in the adaptive division.

The Rip Curl Pro Tofino wouldn’t be possible with the support of our amazing sponsors, the local surfing community, as well as the support from the Canadian Surfing Association.

Pro Men’s Semi-Finalists Decided As Rip Curl Pro Tofino Fires Again On Day 2

Saturday, May 13th 2017 (Cox Bay, Tofino, BC, Canada) - The field of 40 men in the Pro division has been narrowed down to the final 4 here on day two of competition at the 2017 Rip Curl Pro Tofino presented by Monster Energy. A full day of action showcased eight different divisions as Cox Bay continued to deliver quality waves for the 11th annual event. A light breeze, met with consistent 3-4 foot peaks, offered plenty of opportunity for both local Canadian surfers and traveling visitors.

20-year-old Pat Curren stole the show today following up a dominant performance by his father Tom Curren during yesterday’s opening day of competition. The younger Curren found his form as he advanced through multiple heats and capped off the day with a dominating quarterfinal performance scoring the day’s highest single score of a 8.93 for a fully rotated backside air.

"I’m feeling really good this event, I think it’s the mindset about having fun for this contest especially…I try not to look at the competitors waves either, I stay in my own zone and try to do my own thing," Curren explained of his new found heat strategy.

Curren described what was arguably the most radical maneuver of the Rip Curl Pro thus far.

"I guess it was a hail mary? I landed clean and felt good. I was surprised I landed but I was psyched on it, super stoked."

Tomorrow’s final day of competition will see the Pro Men’s divvy down to man-on-man heats, as last year’s defending champion Kevin Shulz will face 6x past winner Peter Devries, while Curren will face young Californian Elijah Fox.

Moving on to the Women’s Pro/Am division, the girls showed off their talents as numerous excellent rides filled the score sheets. However, the youngest of all the competitors rose above the field to steal the spotlight. 11-year-old Tofino local, Sanoa Olin dominated her semi-final heat over the much more experienced girls.

"I got the one left and the one right but I knew that I needed something and then the wave came and I was like ‘Okay, this is one,’" stated a relieved Olin, "When I heard the scores I was excited, because I was like ‘Okay I’m going to make it.’"

With a total of 12 divisions set to crown both event and Canadian National champions heading into tomorrow’s final day of competition, competitors will face their toughest challenges as only the top talents remain in the draw. With more quality swell is expected to arrive, the anticipated beach full of spectators will be in for a real treat.

The 11th Annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino Is Met With Pumping Surf And Stellar Performances!

Friday, May 12th 2017 (Cox Bay, Tofino, BC, Canada) - The 11th annual Rip Curl Pro presented by Monster Energy kicked off competition today in pumping surf at Cox Bay, Tofino, Canada. Offshore head high peaks met the event’s top professional competitors as two rounds were completed in excellent conditions.

The talk of the beach was 3x WSL World Champion, 52-year-old Tom Curren, who advanced over 2016 Rip Curl Pro Tofino champion Kevin Schulz. In the dying minutes of the heat, Curren found a barrel only Curren could find, as he disappeared behind the curtain and re-emerged to the roar of the crowd.

A fired up Curren explained, "I knew they were out there, I was looking for them and I knew they were out there so I said, I’m just going to be ready in case I see one, and one came at the very end. So…I was pretty happy."Another standout on day one of competition was California’s Kilian Garland. Garland, the 2016 WSL North American Champion was another new addition to the event, as each year sees a growing field of world-class talent.

Garland, who advanced through two heats with multiple excellent rides, explained his experience and reasoning for taking the long two-day drive up to Tofino.

"I’m still trying to get used to the spot, my boards, wearing gloves and booties and a hood [laughs]. It’s kind of a new experience [surfing in Tofino], you know? There are good rights and good lefts and they’re really long waves, so you can do a lot of different maneuvers."

Garland continued, "I noticed this contest got a lot of press last year, and there’s some big names in it. You have got Tom Curren here, Noah Wegrich and Kevin Shulz who won it last year. Tofino is such a beautiful place, so why not come up here? It was kind of a last minute trip, I decided to enter the contest and then it was time to leave."

One of today’s local standouts was Canadian National Team Member, Michael Darling, who advanced over 2x event champion, Noah Cohen. Darling used his polished forehand attack to tear apart the Cox Bay walls.

"It was a tough, I had a teammate, Noah Cohen in my heat and we kind of went back-and-forth a couple times and I thought he won and I was like ‘that’s great’ because he’s a good friend and a teammate and it was a good start for him," said an empathetic Darling, "My best results so far have been the semis and I would like to get back to the semis and try my best, but there is a lot of insane talent up here right now so it’s pretty full on!"

The day wrapped up with two rounds of the Open Men’s division as high quality surf continued to bless competitors all day long. Looking towards tomorrow’s second day of competition we will see numerous new divisions hitting the lineup, including 35+ Masters, Pro Women’s, U18 Boys, U16 Girls, U16 Boys, and Longboard Mens.

Surfers from across Canada and across the globe are packing their bags and heading for Tofino for this week’s Rip Curl Pro Tofino presented by Monster Energy. Serving as the Canadian Surfing Championships, the three days of competition will commence on Friday May 12th in Tofino, British Columbia.

150 surfers over twelve categories will vie for the title of Rip Curl Pro Champion, with the top ranked Canadian holding the 2017 National title.

The hotly contested Men’s Pro category is set to excite with all previous event champions currently registered to compete. On the women’s side, teenage Phenom, Matea Olin, will look to continue her ascendancy to the top of Canadian Women’s surfing. A solid field of girls, led by previous champion and Tofino local Hanna Scott will make sure that Olin is on the top of her game to win her first Rip Curl Pro Women’s Pro title.

After a fun & successful first Rip Curl Pro campaign in 2016, three-time world surfing champion, Tom Curren (Santa Barbara, California) is heading back to Tofino to defend his Masters title and take down some event favourites in the Men’s Pro division.

Nick Russell, Rip Curl Pro Event Director & Rip Curl Canada VP, added "a week out we are all getting antsy to get going. The competitor list is the strongest we have ever seen and we’re excited that Canada’s premiere event is increasingly attracting elite surfers from around the world””
