Rip Curl Pro Tofino 2016 - 10th Anniversary Event Recap

The Rip Curl Pro 10th Anniversary and Pro Photographer showdown happened May 27th - 29th 2016 at Cox Bay Tofino. After the three-day extravaganza in British Columbia, where a $25,000 cash and prices purse was dispersed amongst a frothing pack of northern North America’s best surfers, California pro Kevin Schulz stood atop the podium after dominating fun, chest-high surf at Cox Bay to win the Pro Men’s division of the 10th Annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino in front of a packed crowd of local surf fans.

At the 3rd annual Rip Curl Pro Photographer showdown, Tom Curren, Pat Curren, and Vince Vaccaro free styled the guitar, while photographer Mike Bromley won the showdown with an amazing photo reel.

Young American Kevin Schulz storms Cox Bay to Win the 10th Annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino

Tofino, BC, Canada (Sunday, May 29th 2016) The third and final day of the 10th annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino completed today as National Champions and Rip Curl Pro champions were crowned and $10,000 in prize money was awarded. It was a gorgeous day down at Cox Bay as clean and fun chest high conditions were on offer all day long. A packed crowd gathered to cheer on the Tofino local surfers, as it seemed like the entire town came down to the beach to support the event.

In the premiere Pro Men’s division the event supported a man-on-man format for the first time ever. In a tightly fought semi-final, 6-time RC Pro Tofino champion, Peter Devries, defeated last year’s event winner Noah Wegrich. On the other side of the draw the in-form surfer of the event, Californian Kevin Schulz, defeated today’s 18/U Canadian National Champ Sean Forrester. It was a perfect matchup leading into the 25-minute final. Devries opened up with numerous quality rides, but it was Schulz who dropped the highest score of the final, 7.6, for a critical front-side combo and took the lead heading into the final moments. With only seconds remaining and needing a 7.17 Devries utilized priority and pulled off dramatic air reverse but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough as the judges scored a 7.07.

Pro champion, Shultz, went on to describe his event strategy: “I came up here with the intention of surfing some heats, and put it in my mind to come up and win, as well as have fun. I think that’s really important in surfing. The whole time I kept my head down and did what I needed to do to make heats, and in the end I came out on top. It feels really good.”

He went on to describe where this win fits in his surfing career, “This is the biggest win I’ve ever had, especially an event with an international field. This is a big scale contest, and the biggest win of my life.”

In the Women’s Pro/Am, 13-year-old phenom, Mathea Olin, kept her winning streak alive after winning yesterday’s Girl’s 16/U final. Olin took home $1,500 for her efforts and has made a statement as the future of women’s surfing in Canada.

3-time WSL World Champion, Tom Curren, was another winner today as he took the Masters 50+ division title. Curren was a real treat for the local fans that came down to view the event. Curren described his time at the Rip Curl Pro, “The event was great, it was very enjoyable experience, and to top it off the people of Canada are extremely nice and friendly.”

Other division winners include; Noah Wegrich (Expression Session), Freddy Sanford (Open Men’s), Ben Murphy (Masters 35+), Sean Forrester (Boy’s U/18), Robbie Ferguson (Men’s Longboard), and Leah Oke (Women’s Longboard).

The Rip Curl Pro would like to thank the local Tofino community for its hospitality and allowing the event to run at Cox Bay for it’s 10th consecutive year. Till next year, aurevoir!

Canadian National Champions Crowned on the 2nd Day of the Rip Curl Pro Tofino

Tofino, BC, Canada (Saturday, May 28th 2016) The 10th annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino commenced its second day of competition as multiple divisions wrapped up and Canadian National Champions were crowned. Not only are competitors aimed at Rip Curl Pro titles, each division winner is also awarded the 2016 Canadian National title.

The day’s conditions were a polar opposite from day one as a dark stormed moved over the event site, however the wind was calm and the waves stayed glassy during the duration of the day. Highly contestable 1-3 foot waves lined up at the Cox Bay sand bar and a full day of competition commenced.

Today’s competition featured many divisions including, Pro-Am Women’s, Boy’s 18/U, Men’s Masters 35+, Boy’s 16/U, Girl’s 12/U, Girl’s 16/U, Men’s Longboard, Women’s Longboard, and the Core Store Challenge.

The stand out performances on day two were provided by Ben Murphy (Victoria, BC), Leah Oke (Panama), and Mathea Olin (Tofino, BC).

Murphy, who unfortunately bowed out early of yesterday’s Pro division, came out strong in the Masters as he recorded his first ever-perfect 10 of his surfing career. He went on to describe his ride, “The wave offered up two nice sections where I got to hit the lip a few times, and then followed it up with an air. I am so stoked, I didn’t believe it when they announced it, and I thought it was a joke. I felt like I got lucky as the wave really stood up, it was a roll of the dice and I just went for it.”

Oke, who grew up in Victoria, BC, and now residing in Panama was this morning’s stand out in the Pro-am Women’s. Despite the minimal swell Oke found a diamond in the rough as she tucked into a nice tube ride and scored a combined heat total of 16.17 points.

The real standout of the day had to be Tofino local and fan favorite Mathea Olin. Olin (age 13) who surfed in three divisions was on fire all day scoring numerous rides in the 8-9+ point range. When describing her day she explained, “Today was a lot of fun competing with all my friends and my sister, they were all surfing amazing, and waves ended up pumping too!”

Rip Curl would like to congratulate all of our division champions today; Sanoa Olin (Girl’s 12/U), Mathea Olin (Girl’s 16/U), Reed Platenius (Boy’s 12/U), and Freddy Sanford (Boy’s 16/U).

Tomorrow the event will recommence with the third and final day of competition, as champions will be crowned in all of the remaining divisions.

COMPETITION KICKS OFF AT THE 10TH ANNUAL RIP CURL PRO TOFINO!

Tofino, BC - Canada (Friday, May 27th, 2016) The 10th annual Rip Curl Pro Tofino kicked off in contestable yet challenging conditions at Cox Bay, Tofino, Canada. Knee to waist high surf met the event’s top professional and open men’s competitors as multiple rounds of the event were completed. Although the surf wasn’t easy the talented field of local standouts and International competitors dismantled the lineup with radical surfing.

Today's standout's included the 6-time Rip Curl Tofino Pro champion Peter Devries, 3x WSL World champion Tom Curren, and young American out of San Clemente, CA Kevin Schulz.

Devries is looking to avenge a narrow defeat at last year’s event to Noah Wegrich (Santa Cruz, CA) and came out of the gates firing, while scoring numerous quality scores during his two heats. Devries, who lives just down the road from the event, took advantage of his local knowledge, while surfing with incredible speed and flair.

Being the Rip Curl Pro’s 10th year, the event invited a very special guest to take part in the weekend’s activities as well as don the event jersey and take to the lineup. At the age of 51, Tom Curren showed that he’s still got it, as he used his patented front side arc to advance through his round 1 heat. Unfortunately for Curren the waves didn’t cooperate in round 2 as he fell short of advancement.

The day’s highlights came courtesy of 18-year-old Kevin Schulz. Schulz used his recent run of WQS competition to show off his fine form. From beginning in the trials, he won all three heats he entered, as well as amassing the highest heat total of the day, 17 points, in a win over Devries, Jackson Degruchy, and C.C. Unger.

When describing his quarter showdown with the 6x past champion Schultz explained, “Pete’s a really amazing surfer, I went out there with the intention of having fun and surfing with him, not really against him. We ended up going blow for blow, and to come out on top over Pete is really insane, I have a lot of respect for him.”

Tomorrow the event continues with many new divisions taking to the lineup, 35+ Masters, U18 Boys, Pro/Am Womens, U12 Girls, Longboard Womens, Longboard Mens and the Shop Challenge.

Rip Curl Pro Tofino/Canadian Surfing Titles - May 27-29, 2016

May 12th, 2016

RIP CURL PRO TOFINO – CANADIAN SURFING TITLES

On May 27th to 29th 2016 Canada’s best surfers, accompanied by a high quality international field, will descend on Cox Bay, Tofino, for the 10th Anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro National Surfing titles.

Surfers in 12 separate divisions will vie for over $25,000 in cash and prizes over three days at Cox Bay in Tofino, BC. An additional day of competition has been added to this year’s event to cater for the significant growth in competitors. This event is Canada’s largest surfing competition and the only one in Canada open to all divisions.

President of the Canadian Surfing Association and Competition director Dom Domic said, “This event will provide winning athletes a spring board to international events that will count towards their qualification run to the 2019 PanAm Games in Peru and possibly the 2020 Tokyo Olympics”

A growing number of International athletes are making the trek to Canada’s west coast each year. Last years event winner, Californian Noah “Waggy” Wegrich, is excited about defending his title. “I can’t wait to get back up to Tofino, last year was a big win for me, to take such a tight final against Canada’s best was an awesome result and one I hope to repeat” ”

Event organisers have made some significant adjustments to cater for the growth in the event and have the Rip Curl Pro Tofino move more in line with World Tour events. “We are really excited heading into our 10th Anniversary event, this year sees the addition of a third day of competition, the introduction of live scoring and man on man finals for Men’s Pro. Making Canada's premiere event even better!” Nick Russell, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Rip Curl.

The Rip Curl Pro Tofino is presented by Monster Energy in association with Coors Banquet, Telus, Spy Optics, Evan Williams Bourbon, Flor de Cana, Canadian Surfing Association, Surfline, Coast Mountain Culture, Aftanas Surfboards &Tourism Tofino.
