Vancouver Island Westcoast Report, September 2006
September brought back the swell, we had great waves and great weather conditions out here for most of the month. There were only a handful of days that I didn't take my gear down to the beach, a couple of days I shot three different sessions. It was great to have the local crew on hand most of the month, inspiring surfing to compliment good waves and weather. The water temp's been holding, heard that it's an El Nino year, so that means warmer water, and drier than usual weather for us this winter. I for one will be doing a little sunshine and swell dance pretty regular so that I can keep my camera shutter clickin'. Enjoy looking through September's shots, see you at the beach.

Vancouver Island Westcoast Report, Fogust 2006
That's right Fogust! This was definitely one of the foggiest Augusts that I can remember. That makes it a challenge for shooting. We all love those crisp full o' colour shots, sunlight sparkling off a wave face, highlighting a rail or lighting up a wave from behind. That's sweet but it takes overhead plus waves and maybe a little black & white magic to make a foggy surf shot look truly great. Luckily there were a few of those magic windows of opportunity when light and waves coincided and we were there to make the most of it. Hope that you enjoy this selection of last months jewels.

| Westcoast VI April Update
April '06 VI Midcoast Notes
Out here on Vancouver Island's west coast I'm often pleasantly
surprised by the reaction when approaching potential sponsors for
money in support of junior surfing. The majority are keen,
interested and supportive. If for whatever reason they can't
contribute every time they share their enthusiasm for the Jr. Team
and appreciation for the volunteer effort required and explain that
they see it as a very good thing. Oddly, in the city where there is
more money being made in the industry, support is lacking. I suppose
out here on the coast just about every business has at least one
surfer on staff and direct impact, money in for money out, is more
obvious, not that much of a stretch to connect.
I want to believe that most contribute, cash or volunteer, because
it's the right thing to do. They're proud of and want to be known as
connected to the power of youth potential. Maybe their contribution
is offering these kids something that many of us wish adults in our
time would have done for us. It could be that those of us who had
adults guide us in the belief of our potential do it to keep that
flame burning. Whatever the reason it's happened again and 5 kids
from BC are headed to the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing
Championships, this time in Brazil. Think about it ...five VI kids
in the sandbox with kids from 30 other nations, living the dream.
Bravo everyone!!!

| Westcoast VI March Update
Longer daylight days are here, time for a session after work or a dawn patrol before, you've got to love it! What's up with the water temperature though? It's been fffrrr fffrrr fffrrreezing this month! There were a couple of days that the surface temp' dropped down to 46.8, that's colder than the winter!
Well, time is here for warmer days and it won't be long before the water temperature warms up and we'll shed the 6/5/4's, gloves and boots and get into those 4/3's or even 3/2's... It's coming...
Enjoy this month's shots

| Feb 2006 Westcoast VI Update
February kicked off with a monstrous south swell that, unfortunately
for some, coincided with an extreme high tide. Havoc and destruction
was the result at many beaches mid Vancouver Island. In Barkley
Sound the morning of the 4th was nothing less than awe inspiring. Cabins had been pushed back into the woods, some shoved onto the road. Logs and driftwood had been tossed through windows into the cabins, others pushed up through floorboards. The destruction was amazing but for most of us the real stoke was in the water. Triple overhead plus sets were consistently rolling in and the wind was offshore, howling at times. We were with 30 or more surfers watching from the shore. During the height of the swell there were 4 souls gutsy enough to paddle out; the Bruhwiler brothers Raph and Sepp, Ryan Erickson and 16 year old Noah Cohen. Raph tore it up, appearing completely at home in the massive surf. He bounced off the bottom at least once and snapped a board but paddled back out "amped" regardless. The only down side for me was the cold rain that when combined with the wind really messed with shooting. I had a difficult time keeping the front element of my lens dry so... the shots aren't as good as they could have been but you'll get the idea. The scene is etched into my memory regardless.Up until about the 17th the swell remained pretty consistent and we finally got our winter sunshine break... a great reprieve our standard rain and overcast conditions. The swell dropped for about a week but reappeared yesterday with another big south swell. All in all February '06 was a great month for surf and surfing out here on the edge.

| Mid Coast VI Report, January '06
We had a fabulous amount of swell come our way this month with great
days at all the local spots and the usual suspects all over it. It
was all mixed in with more rain and gray conditions but the sun did
break through on occasion to make for fabulous raking side light and
good shooting. One double overhead day at Cox I witnessed a
telephone pole sized log flip end to end in the line
up ...unbelievable. We travelled deteriorating, wind fall laden
logging roads numerous times to take advantage of south and south
west swell and wind direction. With daylight pushing later into the
day, consistent swell, and sunshine gracing us a little more often
February is certainly a welcome thought.
