Stand Up Paddleboarding on Oyster Bay, Ladysmith BC, Dec/30/2014 - CoastalBC.com
Sunny & near freezing, light ripple to glassy calm - same route as yesterday around Woods Islands, only solo. Ran into a little ice on Burleith Arm. Really quiet, nobody out. Aside from the distant din of traffic, there was just the sound of the paddle, the nose wake coming off the board, the creak of my wetsuit, and birds.

Out Burleith Arm & back up the harbour along Woods Island. Stiff breeze at times but lots of glass. Sunny & near freezing. Couple of Eagles came up the shoreline oblivious to us. One with a seagull in it's talons, the other wanting a seagull I think.

stumbled upon the derelict on on the way to Burleith Arm - Stand Up Paddleboarding on Oyster Bay, Ladysmith BC, Dec/26/2014

I headed out and across the bay toward Burleith Arm. Sometimes I like the river-like feel of the place. It's quiet, contained. My sciatica's been nagging me a bit and i was thinking about my paddling. Hold on with the feet. Start pushing from the ankles and push everything else forward as you pull the paddle back. It was stretching out my lower back re-e-a-al good. It was about half an hour before sunset. Low cloud shrouded the mountains and a fine mist hinted at rain. The water was glassy and I stared down into it, to the clouds mirrored deep below, and I pulled hard towards Page Point. The light was kinda crappy but I thought there might be a photo around the docks, and as i look up there's the derelict sitting right in front of me. Still listing but maybe a little higher in the water. Looking at yesterday's photos I can see I took 12 photos containing the derelict, sorted through and didn't see anything in them interesting enough to post here. Today it's a surprise to look up and see it there. That's a bad sign, isn't it?

Good workout this evening, calm water, and this camera keeps impressing me. Thought it was too dark to get anything half decent. Took 180 pics. Deleted 50 out-of-focus. Posted 14.

Another really great paddle. Watched the bay go from glass to ripple to chop and back again all day. About 2:30pm I saw the wind was dropping once again and paddled out into the warm sunshine. I couldn't stick to a steering point. Just wandered all over the top of the bay and then started shooting photos along the way out to Page Point and around the marina. Great day for reflections. Put the camera [fuji finepix xp70] on a new setting [scene recognition], shot 240 pics in two hours and hated to come in. A killer afternoon.

looking for the derelict on Oyster Bay, Dec/19/2014

looking for the derelict - Stand Up Paddleboarding on Oyster Bay, Ladysmith BC, Dec/19/2014 - CoastalBC.com

Rain clouds moving in and wind rising I headed out the bay looking for the Derelict Sailboat. The Coast Guard said it had been towed up to Slag Point. Past the mills I slipped along the shore and under the gangways and came out through the dog patch [live-a-boards at anchor] but the derelict was not among them. Heard about some guy ranting and cursing around the docks "some rat b#@$&%d had tied some half sunk piece of s%#t to the kicker on his boat" the night the derelict was towed down, so who knows where it ended up. Can't be far but i guess it could be deep. Paddled home in a soft rain. Quiet & calm.

I seem to looking out at glass all through the days recently but i can't quite get out and on it until late in the day. This afternoon I ran into Santa & his sleigh complete with independently powered aluminum pontoon. I slipped past the marina and up the shoreline and there in the water under a tree was a newish Dock Box, 27"H x 46"W x 26"D $739.99 on http://www.westmarine.com/ . Of note: the tree it was under is not mine. We went back the next day and it was 100' up the shore and we loaded it on the board and took it home. The board did not handle well but once i knelt it was manageable. An email to the marina was answered the next morning. One of their clients had lost it in the winds last week is happy to have it back. The West Marine Dock Box is maybe tied for the best flotsam I've ever found.

decided I'd chase down the derelict in the fading light this afternoon. I saw the coast guard do a couple of turns and head into Ladysmith Marina as I approached it. I was headed for Slag Point which seems to collect the area's dregs & derelicts. As I passed the second Mill, the dozer boats were busy up ahead and the light was fading. I realized the Coat Guard would know what happened to the derelict. I turned and caught them in the parking lot. "Someone had grabbed it & towed it to Slag" they told me and then asked where my PFD & bailing can was [kidding].

There's a little cabin up the shoreline on the way home. I have an affinity for little shacks. I've built a few of them over the years. Some of the larger ones were monster shacks in West & North Van in the late 80's but my favourite thing that I ever built was the first structure i ever built. A 6' by 8' shack built out of mill off-cuts on the back of our cottage property. I was 13 and my dad took some time with me on his holidays and it was the best project we ever did together. I moved into it of course. The cottage is out of the family now, leveled and replaced with 5000 sq ft of city house but the cabin remains, a refuge away from 'it'. Long live the cabin.

the Derelict Sailboat - Stand Up Paddleboarding on Oyster Bay, Ladysmith BC, Dec/03/2014

well the ice is mostly gone and i head across the bay. Without my glasses it looks like someone has anchored off Bush Creek estuary. There's a low tide coming tonight and they are going to be high & dry. You see few boats around that shore and as I turn up the bay I wonder if the derelict sailboat has moved any further. Without looking I realize this strangely anchored boat is the derelict. With recent high tides and the ice, this thing has righted itself and bumped it's way across the bottom for a good kilometer from where it was a few days ago. On the 4th in the early morning fog, it floated off the mud flats, past our place and the boats at anchor, and headed out of the bay.

this morning I could see some open water along our shore. We had maybe 1 km of open water along the shoreline with a few leads out into the bay. The rest was 1/4 inch soft ice that flexed over passing ripples and board wake as we cut through it, and thicker ice that held better under one side of the board or the other, constantly threatening to pitch us in. We thought briefly about breaking our way up to the head of the bay, but it seemed like more work than fun so we tooled about in the open water. Again we were thinking it would be a short paddle with nowhere to go. We both wore 5/4 full suits w/boots, but should have had gloves too because we ended up staying out for two hours. My hands eventually warmed up and stayed warm, but Rory pushed the bounds of balance so often he must have gone swimming 6 or 8 times. His hands went out cold and back the same way.

12 C and kinda balmy. Perfect in a 1.5mm rashie. Rain showers and light gusty winds. Weather's changing and it's going to get cold. Didn't want to go out but happy to be out on the water again.

The derelict sailboat moved 100' south in the last big blow. No keel on her. Rory don't think she's rehabilitatable.

Rory Kennedy's back and we went out for a few hours mid-day Saturday. Perfect day. Went across to Page Point and into Burleith Arm, down to the wet log sort, around the south end of the Woods Islands and back up the bay through Ladysmith harbour. Waited for a little log tow to pass by and got buzzed by a remote control plane. I was a little too warm in a 1.5 mm rashie. Rory was obviously a little warm in a 1mm rashie because he took a dip. I'm not sure his intention was to get wet, but he's been playing with the standability envelope and he always seems to push it one bit too far. All in all, one of those warm, sunny late fall days that makes you happy to live on this coast.

Lately we've been laughing on the walk home from paddling.
On the way out the temperature's not right or the water's not right, or we're not right and we often say "we'll just paddle across and back. Across and back was the standard prone paddle we've been doing for decades here. It's just short of a km round trip and for all the times we've said it out loud or just thought it, we've never gone straight across and back on the SUPs, and called it a day. Not once. Somehow we forget from one day to the next how nice it is to be out on the water and that it's always worth the bother.

I nearly did it today. My shortest paddle yet. Watched a glassy bay in full sun all day as I moved from one chore to the next. Sun was off the water at 4pm yesterday and today it is 3:15. Under 10 minutes to change, walk down to the water and launch... too late to go out today. I stood in the window for 10 minutes and watched a little wind shear start to ripple the surface suggesting pathways across the bay. Screw this. Changed, filled the boots with hot water and headed out the door. Caught the sun half way across the bay and headed up the far shore a short way until the sun flickered and failed. As I told the neighbours, sitting in their yard by a fire, "as soon as I lost the sun, I was underdressed" Guess it's time for more rubber.

went out after lunch and up to the head of the bay. Ran into ice twice near the mouth of a stream. The fist batch was thicker and threatened to dump me, but the second patch parted like the red sea. It was -3C on the porch this am. Still wearing 7mm boots, boardshorts and a 1.5mm rashie. I added a toque today and was toasty in the sunshine @ about 5C

I've been paddling pretty regularly for the last few months and as I paddled today I thought about posting new, current photos a few times a week, regularly. I pretty much just paddle out front on the bay and a so pang of fear strikes. "you'll never find new shots. It'll turn into the same old, same old, fast enough". So I started hunting as I paddled and shot 75 pictures and weeded them down to these 18, not bad, kinda interesting, good enough for a Thurdsay afternoon shots. I think it's going to be like worrying about getting bored with the same bay, day after day, but you know, the bay's never the same twice. I'll try and get some more soon.
hope you like em
