WhaT iT is: This park has two of three phases complete with an old school snake run into a 6’ bowl (sorry no coping) and a big tranny square with multiple quarter pipes from 3’ to 9’, a spine, bowl corner and fun box with hubba in the middle. On the back side of the concrete square is an asphalt area with wooden ramps, originally built for some comps a few years ago, the ramp armor structures are still holding strong. There is a double flat bank box, 9’ quarter, 5’ quarter with flat banks on either side and a funky fun box that is largely ignored but does offer a hubba, up gap and flat banks.

LocaTed: 4330 Blackcomb Way, It's at the end of the Day Parking Lot, tucked away in the forest by Fitzsimons Creek.

NoTes: Rumor has it that the third phase will be a plaza style venue with a much needed mini ramp, but nothing has been started as of yet. Another plan in the works is the installation of stadium lights to keep things rolling well after dark. I even saw the guy with the blue prints asking skaters where WE need the lights!

Skateboard Park rejuvenation opens with latest street-style elements

Whistler Skateboard Park rejuvenation opens with latest street-style elements - June 7, 2016

Ceremonial opening scheduled for 4:00pm Tuesday, June 7

Resort Municipality of Whistler News Release May 26, 2016: Whistler, B.C. – Attention skaters: The highly-anticipated addition to the Whistler Skate Park is complete and now open to the public.

Measuring at over 50,000 square feet, the Whistler Skate Park is now the second largest skate park in Canada. The expansion incorporates flowy lines and street-style elements. The focus of the addition is on long lines and multiple ledges for hitting, allowing skaters to pump and flow for speed.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has completed several other improvements to the skate park in the last week, including:

  • Replacing and expanding asphalt around the phase 1 snake bowl
  • Patching concrete in phase 1 of the skate park
  • Lifting the tree canopy around the park to improve sightlines, safety and air flow (which helps the skate park dry out faster after rain and spring snow melt)
  • Removing several cottonwood trees around the park, which reduces the amount of leaf litter removal by staff and user prior to skating

The ceremonial opening is being planned for Tuesday, June 7. Full details will be released in the coming days.

“Whistler’s Skate Park has a reputation as being one of the best in British Columbia, and the rejuvenation brings the park in line with recent evolutions in the sport,” said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “The Whistler skate community and visiting skaters have been eagerly awaiting these features to continue progressing skating within the resort community.”

Upgrades to the Whistler Skate Park have been underway since 2014, with extensive consultation with the skating community including two open houses and online design feedback through Facebook. Design was undertaken by Spectrum Skateparks Ltd. of North Vancouver, BC. Construction was by EHR Contracting Ltd. from Chilliwack, BC

The addition marks the third phase to the park, and builds off the first two phases constructed in the 1990s, including the well-known snake bowl. The expansion increases the potential for the park to host large skateboard events in the future such as a Slam City Jam.

“The project is part of the municipality’s ongoing program to invest in high quality and exciting infrastructure and programming for our visitors and community,” added the Mayor.

The rejuvenation project was made possible with $807,000 of funding from the Province of British Columbia’s Resort Municipality Initiative and a generous donation of $100,000 from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

King of Bowl
the King of Bowl series final in Whistler. The event had a great turnout with representation from groms, girls (2 heats), geezers (longboarders) and pros. I missed the final king being crowned but it did not matter because the whole show was killer.
