Xcel Wins 2010 Wetsuit of the Year

Xcel Wins 2010 Wetsuit of the Year
Takes SIMA Image Award Category for 3rd Time in 4 Years

February 4, 2011:Xcel's INFINITI DRYLOCK has won "Wetsuit of the Year" once again at the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Image Awards, honoring the best of the surf industry from 2010.

The win was announced Thursday, February 3, 2011 during the Image Awards ceremony held at the House of Blues Anaheim.

Xcel has now won "Wetsuit of the Year" three out of the four years it has been a SIMA Image Award category, having previously been honored for the INFINITI DRYLOCK (2008) and the INFINITI (2007).

"Wetsuit of the Year" is awarded to the wetsuit retailed in 2010 that featured the most exciting design, appeal, or innovation. The INFINITI DRYLOCK was first nominated by industry retail and manufacturing experts, and ultimately chosen as Image Award winner by a vote of 300 specialty retailers and SIMA member manufacturing companies.

The INFINITI DRYLOCK was chosen from fellow "Wetsuit of the Year" nominees Quiksilver, O'Neill, Rip Curl, and Billabong.

The SIMA Image Awards is the only awards program giving the surf industry the opportunity to recognize fellow companies for their efforts to advance and grow the industry.

"We're excited and proud to be honored by our industry once again," says Xcel president Ed D'Ascoli. "Our focus on delivering the best possible product ensures that our wetsuit innovations and technologies are constantly evolving in terms of warmth, performance, stretch, and beyond. So it's a real honor having our peers recognize the INFINITI DRYLOCK line as it's evolved from year to year."

The INFINITI DRYLOCK fullsuit features Xcel's all new Water-Repellent Fiber (WRF), with material fibers that resist saturation and last longer than alternative water-repellent coatings. Also new to the INFINITI DRYLOCK is an inner geometric patterned ankle seal, which drastically cuts down on flushing.

In keeping with Xcel's goal of minimizing product impact on the environment, all INFINITI DRYLOCK wetsuits feature Xcel's eco-friendly ThermoBamboo inner lining, and cleaner limestone-based neoprenes and glues.

"Top-quality product that works has always been what Xcel is all about," says Greg Wade, Xcel sales and marketing vice president.

"Industry recognition is especially rewarding to everyone whose efforts help us continually deliver that product," continues Wade, "from the support and dedication of our retailers and staff to our team riders getting in the water and testing Xcel gear at the highest levels of performance.

"We're stoked to keep making the best even better."

Swell Source.
#408-864 Pembroke St
Victoria, BC, Canada
V8T 1H9

We manufacture and distribute Zed Skimboards and our most recent project Cascadia Board Co.

September 15, 2010 Victoria, BC – Swell Source announced that it will be launching Cascadia Board Co. brand today in Victoria. The first Canadian company of its kind, they offer a wide variety of water related board sports under one label. Their focus is on hand shaped surfboards and stand up paddle boards.

The brand was created after seeing a void in the Canadian Surf market. Previously Canadian retail shops would have to purchase some of these products from large American brands that did not service Canadian accounts with distributors or reps. Mike Bray from Relic Surf Shop explains why they supported Cascadia in their first year, “We used to deal with a lot of the big guys south of the border but there were always problems with lead times, customs, and just not having direct contact. We’re really happy to have a Canadian company to work with so we don’t have to deal with these headaches anymore.

In their first year Cascadia Board Co. will be focusing on hand shaped surfboards, stand up paddle boards, body boards, and their XRF rental specific soft top surfboards. Company founder Jeff Zamluk points out that while manufacturing a variety of different products they can utilize the technologies and techniques from one sport to the other. “Our main shaper has over 10,000 boards under his belt and is always looking for new ways to improve the product”. Zamluk hopes that the experience of their shapers and the willingness to innovate will give them a competitive advantage at home and in international markets.

Given the success and response of their first sales season Zamluk thinks the future is bright for Cascadia Board Co. “We’re defiantly looking forward to the future, giving back to the different sports we sell too and building the Canadian surf and SUP scene”.

This summer Cascadia Board Co. boards are available in Canada at the following locations: Pacific Boarder, Storm Surf Shop, Long Beach Surf Shop, Relic Surf Shop, Ski and Surf Shop, Rossignol Surf Shop and Second Wave.

Swell Source, established in 1998 on Vancouver Island is a private label manufacturer specializing in the action sports industry. They proudly manufacture, sell and distribute two brands, Zed Skimboards and the newest surf brand in Canada, Cascadia Board Co.

Kelly Slater signs with Quiksilver for another 5 years

Surf Legend’s Partnership with Quiksilver Continues with New Projects and Pursuit of 10th Asp World Championship

(Huntington Beach, Calif.) June 10, 2009 – Quiksilver is pleased to announce that it has signed legendary 9-time ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Champion Kelly Slater to a 5-year endorsement contract, extending his sponsorship arrangement with the company and ensuring that the greatest surfer of all time will be sponsored by Quiksilver for his entire competitive career.

Robert B. McKnight, Jr., Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of Quiksilver, Inc., commented, “We couldn’t be more pleased than to continue our long-standing relationship with the greatest surfer the sport has ever known. Kelly has been a fantastic spokesman for Quiksilver, a terrific ambassador and promoter for the sport of surfing and a true friend of the company. Kelly continues to work toward broadening the exposure of surfing through projects such as his upcoming IMAX movie, and he’s got some great ideas that we will work on together to enhance the marketability of surfing and bring surf competitions to a broader audience in new and innovative ways. Kelly’s agreement to accept a significant portion of his compensation in the form of Quiksilver stock demonstrates his confidence in Quiksilver and our future prospects. We are absolutely delighted to continue our partnership with Kelly.”

Kelly Slater added, “Quiksilver’s been family to me for so long it's hard to remember a time before them. It might not come as a surprise to many people that I've re-signed with them but there have been major transitions in my life and many changes within Quiksilver. It's a long relationship and things often alter over the course of time. In our case, we've got exciting projects that coincide and are still stoked working and surfing together. These next 5 years and beyond will end up being our best together. As we put our minds and efforts together capturing our lifestyle and creating product that reflects this, I see Quiksilver remaining the industry leader. Revisiting what got us there and breaking new ground into some unforeseen areas, it seems things are on the upswing and it’s a fresh time again.”

O’Neill – Warmond, The Netherlands – May 7th, 2009 – O’Neill is proud to announce the launch of the brand’s new retail concept, which was recently unveiled for the first time at O’Neill’s flagship store located in the heart of Amsterdam.

The new retail concept is inspired by Jack O’Neill – founder of O’Neill and inventor of the wetsuit – and is more specifically influenced by the surf pioneer’s unique lifestyle and his iconic house overlooking the Pacific coastline in Santa Cruz, Northern California. Over the years, the house has allowed Jack to maintain an ever-present connection with nature and has also nurtured his passion for board sports: there could be no better source of inspiration for the retail concept.

O’Neill launches new retail concept in the Netherlands

Creating a number of different clean spaces to accommodate O’Neill’s performance and lifestyle products for men and women, the new concept boasts a rustic look and feel that is enhanced by the incorporation of organic materials that serve to reflect the purity of NorCal’s natural environment. The original house has also inspired the concept’s weather-beaten color scheme, while a more contemporary twist on the wider theme brings the interior bang up to date.

The retail concept was developed in close collaboration with New York City-based practice Anderson Architects, and draws a number of overt physical parallels to Jack’s original house. In addition to featuring distinctive Jack-style portholes, the new concept also incorporates a welcoming porch area with en-suite bathtub, as well as a comfortable garage area that tempts shoppers to kick back and rest their weary feet.

O’Neill’s Lex van Opstal, Store Design Manager, says: “We set out to create a retail concept that would showcase our range of products in an inspiring light whilst also shedding light on the influences that have made Jack one of surfing’s most innovative and free-spirited characters. We were determined to create a one-of-a-kind retail destination that could double up as a warm and welcoming living space, allowing the past, present and future to exist as one. Essentially, we wanted to take our customers on a journey through time and right into the home of O’Neill, and we’re confident the new concept does all that and a whole lot more.”

Eppo van Berckelaer, Global Marketing Director at O’Neill, said: “The launch of the new retail concept sets down the foundations for our ability to provide customers from all over the world with a consistent, innovative and premium retail experience. We invite customers to visit our newly reopened Amsterdam store, and look forward to listening to their feedback before rolling the new concept out on a global scale.”

To discover more about O’Neill and to find the location of your nearest O’Neill retail store, visit .

To celebrate the opening of the O’Neill store in Amsterdam and the premiere of the brand’s new retail concept, O’Neill team rider and top international wakeboarder Duncan Zuur put on an inspiring show on the city’s famous canals. Equipped with his wakeboard and a motorized rope winch, the Dutchman amazed onlookers by carving his way along the narrow and picturesque waterways. The event marked another career highlight for Zuur, who attracted worldwide attention only last year by wakeboarding across a flooded St. Mark’s Square in Venice.
Watch Duncan in action on the Amsterdam canals:

Last night Quiksilver and Billabong premiered the film “A Fly In The Champagne” in Vancouver at Tunnel Multi-Lounge.

The place was packed with people eager to see the new documentary based on the surf rivalry of Kelly Slater and Andy Irons. Industry, shop staff, friends and guests had a 360 degree view of the film with screens lining both sides of the lounge.

The movie takes a look into the minds of Kelly and Andy and the emotions of competing against each other - as well as the highs and lows of competing on tour. The two, in the end, take a surf trip together – something a lot of skeptics said would never happen.

Check out some of the photos from last night and if you haven’t seen the movie – you should soon.

“A Fly In The Champagne” will be in Canadian retail locations June 1, 2009.

Greg Long Wins Billabong XXL Ride of the Year
Takes Home Top Honors for Epic Ride at Dungeons

HALEIWA, OAHU, HAWAII - APRIL 21, 2009 - Greg Long (California, USA) has won big at the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards this past weekend, taking top honors in the Ride of the Year category.

Xcel rider Long's winning ride was a thrilling tube conquered during the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest in July 2008 at Dungeons, off Cape Town, South Africa. Long, 26, was the only entrant in the Ride of the Year category who rode without towing in; that is, without assistance from a jet-ski.

"I'm glad to have won this as a paddle-in wave," Long said after his win. "To catch a wave on your own power is an unbelievable feeling."

Considered as the premier big-wave surfing awards, the ninth annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards ceremony was held at the Grove Theatre (Anaheim, California) with a crowd of over 2,000. The awards recognize the biggest and ugliest waves ridden in the past year, with an all-star panel of industry, former professionals, and big-wave specialists judging epic rides from big-wave spots around the globe.

A dedicated and exciting big wave rider, Long is no stranger to big-wave surf accolades. His 2009 win is his fifth XXL award, having previously won Biggest Wave, Monster Paddle, and two Best Overall Performance awards in recent years.

"I'm feeling great - It's my fifth time and now it's the big one," added Long. "We're out there because we love it."

Xcel rider Garrett McNamara (Sunset Beach, Hawaii), also well known for his big-wave performances, took fourth place Ride of the Year for his April 2008 ride at Teahupoo. To check out the winning videos of McNamara's and Long's rides, visit

Rip Curl Celebrates The 40th Searching Boardshort
Rip Curl Celebrates The 40th Searching Boardshort

Vancouver BC (October20th): The concept that has inspired the imaginations of surfers worldwide is set to become reality November 1. The highly anticipated 'H-Bomb' - the World's first power-heated wetsuit - has gone through years of rigorous tests and trials, equating to the most technologically advanced wetsuit the world has ever seen.

"We wanted to challenge the existing concept of the wetsuit and look at new technologies that could take wetsuits to the next level," said Michael Ray, Rip Curl Wetsuit Product Chairman. "The H-Bomb is designed to keep surfers warm in extreme cold water locations where thick layers of neoprene do not always offer enough warmth or are so thick they inhibit the performance of the wearer."

The H-Bomb grasped the attention of the world nearly 2 years ago after the first research and development trip showcased current ASP North American Pro Jr. Champion, Adam Wickwire, punting backside air reverses in the freezing conditions of the Arctic Circle with ease. Since then, the H-Bomb has taken long strides in development, and its top level of quality and durability have met every standard of our wetsuit development team.

The power-heated H-Bomb will change wetsuit technology forever, able to keep surfers warm through heating elements that line the back of the wetsuit. The heating elements, comprised of carbon fiber coils, are powered by two lithium Ion batteries and are strategically placed to warm the surfer’s core, which in turn filters warmth to the extremities.

"The H-Bomb has been tested everywhere from the icy waters of Norway and Iceland to the shark infested waters of South Africa," Ray also stated. "It has the potential to change surfing and ocean exploration forever, allowing cold-water enthusiasts to voyage and enjoy places that were considered too extreme before. Rip Curl's H-Bomb is the future of cold water surfing."

Second Win in a Row as Infiniti Drylock Waterproof System is Honored

HALEIWA, OAHU, HAWAII - MAY 19, 2008 - Xcel proudly announces its win as "Wetsuit of the Year" for the revolutionary Infiniti Drylock waterproof system.

"Wetsuit of the Year" is a prestigious industry award for the wetsuit retailed in 2007 that featured the most exciting design, appeal, or innovation. The title was given by SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturer's Association) at its annual industry conference and Image Awards program in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Infiniti Drylock system, the most watertight, flexible wetsuit on the market today, features a 100% waterproof Drylock zipper as part of Xcel's X-ZIP 2 entry system. It is the next evolution of the Infiniti Series wetsuits that won Xcel these same honors last year.

This year's award cements Xcel's clean sweep of SIMA's "Wetsuit of the Year" title in the only two years it has been a category in SIMA's Image Awards program.

"This is a true honor to have the Infiniti Drylock system recognized by our industry for the first year it hit retail," says Xcel president and founder Ed D'Ascoli. "Achieving this award two years in a row is an exciting example of Xcel's unwavering commitment to delivering the best possible product, as we keep evolving our core products to the next levels of performance, flexibility, and warmth. I'm especially proud of Xcel's great team of staff and retailers whose support and dedication keep making it happen."

Xcel's Infiniti Drylock system was chosen over fellow "Wetsuit of the Year" nominees such as Body Glove, Rip Curl, and O'Neill.

The SIMA Image Awards identifies the surf industry's most influential companies, recognizing them for their efforts to advance and to grow the industry. It is the only awards program that gives the surf industry the opportunity to recognize fellow companies for their outstanding contributions to the industry. Nominees are selected by a panel of industry experts, followed by a formal vote by SIMA members and specialty retailers who determine the ultimate winners.

"We've been seeing the Infiniti Drylock system consistently deliver in all aspects of performance," adds Greg Wade, Xcel vice president of sales and marketing. "Its performance in the water, at retail, and now at SIMA's award program, are all testaments to Xcel's position as a leader in wetsuit design and innovation, and an inspiration to us to keep pushing that leading position even farther. I'm especially excited about the expanded Infiniti Drylock line that we'll be introducing later this year!"

Xcel first introduced the X-ZIP front horizontal zipper system in 1997, a wetsuit entry system that would become the foundation of Xcel's Infiniti Series wetsuits, and the beginning of multiple innovations that would come together to define the complete Infiniti system. The Infiniti Drylock system expands upon the X-ZIP2 front angled zipper to create a whole new maximum-performance waterproof entry system.

All Infiniti Series and Infiniti Drylock system wetsuits feature Xcel's exclusive Fusion Seams for maximum stretch and durability, and ultra-flexible, ultra-light neoprene for an ideal balance of warmth and comfort.
