|Tyler Wright Wins The 2017 WSL World Title, Becomes 2x World Champion|
HONOLUA BAY, Maui, Hawaii (Thursday, November 30, 2017) Australia's Tyler Wright has just won her second and cconsecutive World Title during the Maui Women's Pro, clinching the massive win in pumping 6-8 foot surf at Honolua Bay.
"Wow, I honestly at am a loss for words. It has been such an insane ride, and I'm not looking at this win as the end it's just the beginning and it feels so, so good. Thank yyou so much to my crew for helping me get to where I am today. I couldn't have done it without them."
The win comes after the 23-year-old surfed a near perfect event at the Maui Women's Pro, taking the lead in each and every heat she surfed, and stomping the highest scores of the day in the process.
Coming into the event the only sure-fire way for Tyler to win her second World Title was to win the entire event, but when her main competitors in the Title race went down in round two (Sally Fitzgibbons lost to Hawaiian wildcard Brisa Hennessy) and round four (Courtney Conlogue lost to Rip Curl's Nikki van Dijk), it came down to Tyler winning her quarterfinal heat.
At around 3pm HST today, she did that and officially became thhe 2017 WSL Women's World Surfing Champion, successfully defending her 2016 World Title.
"We are so proud of Tyler," says Neil Ridgway, Rip Curl's Group Advertising and Marketing Chairman. "She has been with us since she was eight years old, and it has been so incredible to watch her grow and develop as a person, and of course, as an outstanding surfer and athlete."
Congratulations Tyler Wright, 2017 and now 2 x WSL Women's World Surfing Champion!
|Gabriel Medina Wins the Quiksilver Pro France|
Gabriel Medina Wins the Quiksilver Pro France, Jumps To Thirds On The Rankings
Gabriel Medina (BRA) has claimed victory today at the Quiksilver Pro France, in excellent three-to-five foot (1 - 1.5 metre) rippable peaks at Stop No. 9 of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT).
2014 WSL Champion Medina built momentum all week to peak at the perfect time in the final heat, and put together two massive heats in the Semifinals and Final to win the Quiksilver Pro France. His final bout against Sebastian Zietz (HAW), held in picture-perfect conditions at La Graviere, was the third French win of his young yet illustrious career.
The 2014 WSL Champion showcased his dominance today after defeating Zietz in the Final, reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) in the Semifinals, and 2012 WSL Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) in the Quarterfinals.
"I am so stoked," said Medina. "It feels so good to win again. I have been working so hard before this event. This is a really special place for me. I am just stoked. I had a great event here with the good waves we got. I am really happy right now. I am not thinking about a World Title or ranking -- I just want to do good at every event. I promised myself that I had to win one event this year and I finally got it!"
The Brazilian's triumph today not only marks his eighth Championship Tour win, but it also vaults him from 8th to 3rd place on the Jeep Leaderboard, placing him well within striking distance of the World Title. Medina will now look to continue his success on the European leg at the next stop on the Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, which opens on October 20, 2017.
"It feels amazing to be back here in France," continued Medina. "I love this kind of beach break. I have waves like this at home, so I feel really comfortable here. France has always been nice to me. This is my third win here and it's amazing. I feel good about the World Title race. Now it is Portugal. Everyone starts from zero, so we will do this all over again, and hopefully, I can do good there."'
In the Final Medina was first to gain momentum as he attacked the long rights with his signature vertical hacks to put a 14.84 (out of a possible 20) heat total quickly on the board. Medina continued to build and pushed his total up to 16 points to claim a third win in France and his first victory this season.
Congratulations on your win Gabriel, and welcome to the World Title race!

|2017 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang, Indonesia||Waiting Period July 10th - Aug 10th|
Padang Padang, Bali - MMonday, 7th Aug 2017: After several close calls at Padang Padang in recent weeks, the waiting period for the 2017 Rip Curl Cup Invitational has drawn to a close without the magic swell required to run the hallowed event. Despite a month-long waiting period during prime swell season (July 10 - August 10), the waves at Padang Padang never reached the world-class caliber required to hold the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest.
For now, The Cup will remain in Bali with reigning Rip Curl Cup Champion Mega Semadhi (IND). The local Balinese surfer who grew up just down the road from Padang Padang will have to wait until next year to defend his title. Meanwhile, the international invitees, which included such heavy hitters as Mason Ho (HAW), Bruno Santos (BRA), Bruce Irons (HAW), Clay Marzo (HAW) and Damien Hobgood (USA) in 2017, will be eager to steal away The Cup in 2018.
With just five days remaining in the waiting period, invited surfers and fans were hoping that the impressive westerly swell that hit Bali over the weekend of August 5 might provide the classic daredevil waves the Rip Curl Cup demands in order to hold competition. While there was the occasional spitting bomb on Saturday evening at Padang Padang, the conditions were never spectacular or consistent enough to greenlight what has become the most anticipated barrel shootout of the year.
Aug/03/2017 Rip Curl Cup Eyes Potential Saturday, Aug 5th Start
For the second time in the event waiting period, contest directors have switched the official event status from red to yellow, or 'High Alert.' After a close call on Thursday, the event has targeted a potential Saturday, Aug. 5th start to competition at 10 AM.
Jul/27/2017 Rip Curl Cup Back In Holding Pattern; Next Potential Contest Swell On Aug. 3rd
Due to a lack of epic surf conditions at Padang Padang on Friday morning, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang will not hold competition this week and will instead wait for a larger swell on the charts for next week.
Jul/24/2017 Rip Curl Cup on 'High Alert' for possible Thursday start at Padang Padang
The 2017 Rip Curl Cup is officially on 'High Alert' to be held on Thursday, July 27th at Padang Padang. With an impressive SW swell currently tracking towards Bali, event directors have changed the official event status to 'Amber' and surfers are now on high alert for a Thursday, 7 AM local start time to run the one-day WSL specialty event.
Padang Padang, Bali - Monday, 10 July 2017: Invited athhletes and surf fans from around the globe gathered at Padang Padang beach on Sunday for the opening ceremony of the Rip Curl Cup 2017. They came from far and wide to bless the event with good waves, a safe competition, and officially christen the start of the holding period to the one of a kind tube riding invitational.
It was a standing room only crowd gathered at Padang Padang to watch the presentation and meet and greet with several of the 16 invited surfers, including defending champion Mega Semadhi (IND). The opening ceremony marks the first day of the one-month event waiting period, and means that all 16 invited surfers - eight Indonesians and eight internationaal surfers - are now on-call to be at Padang Padang witthin 24 hours notice if and when event directors decide to give the green light to run.
The opening ceremony was capped off with the traditional Balinese Kecak Dance performance, to ask the Balinese Gods for permission to hold the contest at this sacred spot and for a massive Padang Padang swell to arrive during the waiting period.
A series of Indian Ocean swells are forecast to reach Bali in the coming weeks and contest directors are monitoring them closely. According to Surfline, the official surf forecast partner of the Rip Curl Cup, the first significant swell will reach Bali on July 15-16, and a possible better swell is currently on the charts for July 20-22. Contest directors are monitoring these swells closely should they develop into potential contest swells to run the Rip Curl Cup. Stay tuned to ripcurl.asia for the latest event status.
Rip Curl Hosts Padang Padang Beach Cleanup
Padang Padang received a welcome facelift just in time for the Rip Curl Cup 2017. The hallowed beach was the site of a massive cleanup effort organized by Rip Curl on Friday, July 7th. Rip Curl Asia staff and volunteers were joined by local environmental community Malu Dong. Together the coalition collected over 50 extra large bags worth of trash - enough to fill a 2-ton dump truck - from the beach, the car park, thee cliffs and the valley behind the beach. Thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in and got their hands dirty on Friday to help clean up one of Bali's most beautiful beaches and the home of the Rip Curl Cup.
The 2017 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang will be webcast live to the world at https://www.ripcurl.asia/id/events/international/rip-curl-cup-padang-padang/home.html. Fans can also visit the site to check the latest Padang Padang swell forecast from official event forecaster Surfline, real-time contest status, and video updates from Bali.

Episode 19 of The Search, Iron Horse Featuring Bruno Santos and Guillermo Satt
"We are in the middle of the Pacific, on a volcanic rock, getting bludgeoned by massive swells. We are, as remote, as you can get."
That's Australian photographer Ted Grambeau talking. If you know Ted Grambeau, then you'll be able to hear the sound of his deep, rough, vaguely erratic voice; the volume rising with each syllable, the delivery slowing with each word, dragging out each sentence until you can almost feel their isolation.
