spawning coho salmon - San Juan River run

spawning coho salmon
San Juan River runs into the ocean at Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
These photos were taken in December around the hatchery on the road to Lake Cowichan, just a few miles out of Renfrew. I think it's probably Fairy Creek, a tributary of San Juan River. The forest is full of spawning channels on both sides of the road and the air is full of the sound of salmon, slapping their way up shallow channels. I think the fish without spots are dog salmon

I went back to the hatchery today and met with the contractor. These fish are part of an estimated 100,000 coho in the San Juan River run. The bulk of the fish came in three waves, late last fall and we watched fish still spawning in the few channels, that have not dried up. The trees are full of eagles, and a bear slipped under the fence last night and cleaned half a dozen fish out of a pool.
