Fishing Report - Gabriola Island, Nanaimo, Valdez Island, Mudge Island, Galiano Island Mar/11/2013

we are just back from fishing Winter Springs (our American friends call them “Sanity or Blackmouth”) what ever you call them they are the most feistiest and tastiest Spring Salmon you can find. They seem to be hanging around Porlier Pass just east of Galiano Island. 20 minutes from our docks at Silva Bay or 1 hour from Vancouver. We caught a couple of 8 -10 #ers. Which 1 was a hatchery stock (missing adipose fin). Always try to save the head, just a couple inches of the snout. Tag it with your contact info, the area and the length. Most marinas have a freezer or a brine bucket supplied by the Salmon Head Recovery Program. If you can’t find one right away take it home and toss it in your freeze until you can find a depot. There is a list in the regs book or on line at “www.pac.dfo.mpo.gc.ca/recfish”. This is a great program as it lets everyone know where the Salmonids started out and help track it migration. You get a report mailed back. It shows to the governing bodies that this works and it easier for the hatcheries to get funding. And that is good for everyone involved. Prawning is also fantastic this time of the year.
